Geology

There is hardly a more versatile way to experience the dynamics and diversity of the earth's history in a small area than in the Soonwald-Nahe Nature Park. Devonian slate and quartzite dominates the landscape at the centre of the nature park. At the southern boundary of the Soonwald forest, extreme pressure and temperature conditions have created a metamorphic zone with exotic rocks such as metadiabase. In the Nahe valley, the impressive steep wall of the red rock is evidence of volcanism in the Perm geological era.

Take the ‘autoroute through millions of years’ and explore the variety of rocks in the Soonwald-Nahe Nature Park. The route leads to rock outcrops, so-called geotopes.

Check the links for more information about the route and the distinctive rock outcrops.
