Nature environment structure

The natural environment is divided into following sections:

  • Hunsrück with the Simmern hollow and the Soonwald forest
  • Northern Upper Rhine lowlands with Rhine Hessian plateaus and hills, Lower Nahe plains and Lower Nahe hills
  • Saar-Nahe-Highlands with the beginning Soonwald forest, Sobernheim valley extension and North Palatinate highlands

The landscape conservation areas Soonwald forest (27,400 ha), the Hoxbach, Gräfenbach and Ellerbachtal valleys (10,200 ha) and the Nahe valley (6,800 ha) are an essential part of the nature park. Today, almost 60% of the area of the nature park has the status of a landscape conservation area.
